as a funding agency, educational institution or supervisor, that your project is worthwhile.<\/p><p>Objectives of the research proposal:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Relevance<\/strong>\u00a0: Convince the reader that your project is interesting, original and important<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Context<\/strong>\u00a0: Show that you know the field, that you understand the current state of research on the topic, and that your ideas have a solid academic basis<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Approach<\/strong>\u00a0: Present your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guillaume-guerard.com\/en\/cours-de-methodologie\/\">methodology<\/a>\u00a0showing that you have carefully considered the data, tools and procedures you will need to conduct the research<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Feasibility<\/strong>\u00a0: Confirm that the project is feasible within the practical limits of the program, institution or funding<\/li><\/ul><p>To do It should:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Put the problem in context (what do we already know?)<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Describe the specific problem the research will address (what do we need to know?)<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Show the relevance of the problem (why do we need to know this?)<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Set the research objectives (what will you do to find out?)<\/li><\/ul><p>In academic research, writing a problem statement can help you contextualize and understand the importance of your research problem. A problem statement can be several paragraphs long and serve as the basis of your research proposal, or it can be condensed into just a few sentences in the introduction to your paper or thesis.<\/p><p>The problem statement should frame your research problem in its particular context and provide an overview of what is already known about it.<\/p><p>The problem statement should also address the relevance of the research: why is it important that the problem be solved?<\/p><p>This doesn&#039;t mean you have to do something revolutionary or world-changing. It is more important that the problem is researchable, actionable, and clearly addresses a relevant problem in your field.<\/p><p>We will see how <a href=\"https:\/\/guillaume-guerard.com\/en\/cours-de-methodologie\/rediger-un-papier-scientifique\/\">write<\/a> the context of your scientific work.<\/p><p>For a first paragraph, focus on the concrete details of the situation:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Where and when does the problem occur?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Who does the problem affect?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">What attempts have been made to resolve the problem?<\/li><\/ul><p><b><i>Voter turnout in Region X has declined steadily over the past decade, unlike other regions of the country. According to surveys conducted by organization Y, participation is lowest among those under 25 and people with low incomes. There have been some effective attempts to involve these groups in other regions and, in the last two elections, parties A and B have stepped up their campaign efforts in region significant effect on participation.<\/i><\/b><\/p><p>Context is directly relevant to a specific problem that affects an organization, an institution, a social group or society more broadly. To fully understand why your research problem is important, you can ask yourself:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">What will happen if the problem is not resolved?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Who will feel the consequences?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Does the problem have broader relevance (for example, are similar problems found in other contexts)?<\/li><\/ul><p><b><i>Low voter turnout has been shown to have negative associations with social cohesion and civic engagement, and is becoming an area of growing concern in many European democracies. When specific groups of citizens lack political representation, they are likely to become more excluded over time, leading to an erosion of trust in democratic institutions. Resolving this issue will have practical benefits for Region X and contribute to the understanding of this widespread phenomenon.<\/i><\/b><\/p><p>Consider providing an update on the scientific, social, geographical and\/or historical context:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">What do we already know about the problem?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Is the problem limited to a certain time period or geographic area?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">How has the problem been defined and debated in the scientific literature?<\/li><\/ul><p><b><i>Over the past decade, the gig economy has become an increasingly important segment of the job market. Those under 30 are more likely to engage in freelance, contract or zero-hours work arrangements instead of traditional full-time jobs. Research into the reasons and consequences of this change has focused on objective measures of income, work hours and employment conditions, but there has been little work exploring the subjective experiences of young people in the gig economy.<\/i><\/b><\/p><p>Sometimes the <a href=\"https:\/\/guillaume-guerard.com\/en\/cours-de-methodologie\/definir-les-questions-scientifiques\/\">questions<\/a> Theoretical theories have clear practical consequences, but sometimes their relevance is less immediately obvious. To identify why the problem is important, ask yourself:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">How will solving the problem advance understanding of the topic?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">What benefits will this have for future research?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Does the problem have direct or indirect consequences for society?<\/li><\/ul><p><b><i>In the literature on the gig economy, these new forms of employment are sometimes characterized as a flexible active choice and sometimes as an exploitative last resort. To better understand why young people engage in the gig economy, in-depth qualitative research is needed. Focusing on workers\u2019 experiences can help develop more robust theories of flexibility and precarity in contemporary employment, as well as potentially inform future policy goals.<\/i><\/b><\/p><p>Finally, the problem statement should frame how you intend to solve the problem. Your goal should not be to find a conclusive solution, but to investigate the reasons for the problem and come up with more effective approaches to solve or understand it.<\/p><p>The research goal is the overall goal of your research. It is generally written in the infinitive form:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">The aim of this study is to determine\u2026<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">This project aims to explore\u2026<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">I aim to investigate\u2026<\/li><\/ul><p><b><i>The purpose of this research is to study effective engagement strategies to increase voter turnout in Region X. It will identify the most significant factors for non-voting through surveys and interviews, and conduct experiments to measure the effectiveness of different strategies.<\/i><\/b><\/p><p><b><i>This project aims to better understand the experiences of young people in the gig economy. Of the <a href=\"https:\/\/guillaume-guerard.com\/en\/cours-de-methodologie\/parfaire-la-methodologie\/\">methods<\/a> Qualitative data will be used to better understand the motivations and perceptions of under-30s engaged in self-employment and zero hours in various sectors. The next step is therefore to transform this point into a <a href=\"https:\/\/guillaume-guerard.com\/en\/cours-de-methodologie\/definir-la-problematique\/\">problematic<\/a> which clearly explains the problem you are going to solve, and proves the relevance of your research.<\/p><p>The problem of your dissertation is not necessarily limited to a single sentence (title).
